"Mustalah al-Hadith" is a science that teaches the rules and methods for analyzing the condition of the text and the chain of narrators (isnad) in order to accept or reject a hadith.
This field teaches various principles that enable a person to study the text and isnad of a hadith. What is found in the chain? Is it acceptable or not? If so, to what degree? What is in the hadith’s content? Is it authentic or weak? If authentic — why? If it has flaws — what are they? In short, this science provides the tools to say: "We accept this hadith" or "We do not."
The benefit of this science is to distinguish authentic hadiths from inauthentic ones. Since hadiths are the second source of Islamic law after the Qur’an, their strength and reliability are crucial.
